For professionals on the go, mobile printing is becoming more of a necessity to get things done. Fortunately, there’s an “app for that” and users can get their documents printed wherever they may be with their iPhone or iPad.

We have tried a handful of mobile printing apps in the Apple App Store, and one of our favorites is Printer Pro by Readdle. It not only connects to Xerox devices with ease, but also any other printer or multifunction unit on the network – no matter the brand. Documents print just like they appear on the screen, and the setup process is painless. The only stipulation is that your iOS device and the printer must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

How To Get Going

Go to the App Store and download the Printer Pro Lite (Free) version. Do not buy the paid version just yet, we want to make sure your printer will work correctly within the application.

Launch the Printer Pro Lite application on your iPhone or iPad and follow the easy on-screen instructions. If the app does not see the printer automatically, download the Printer Pro Desktop software to complete the connection.

When installation is complete, select the printer to be setup. A confirmation screen will display that the printer is available for Printer Pro printing. Note: Installation of multiple printers is available.

Assuming all goes smooth, purchase the Printer Pro app from the App Store to unlock the full features of the app. The free version only allows to test the compatibility of your copier or printer. The iPhone App runs $4.99, while the iPad App costs $6.99.

In testing, we had no trouble connecting to any of the Xerox equipment in our office, but we needed the Printer Pro Desktop software to get everything working correctly. Some printers and copiers will work without the software.

Printer Pro Desktop Install (PC or Mac)

iPhone/iPad Installation For Printer Pro (iPhone/iPad)

Once installed, usage of the app will be depend on what the user. The application can print from Safari, clipboard, contacts, iWork, photos, e-mail attachments and Dropbox. Most apps allow printing by choosing the export or “Open in” arrow found in iOS applications (indicated by the red circle in the Dropbox example below). Photos and contacts can print directly from within the Printer Pro application itself, and Safari prints by placing a “p” in front of the “http” in the web address.

Printing From Dropbox

Printing From Safari

Printing From Photos

Printer Pro is an excellent solution for those on the move that have a need for a hardcopy documents. It is an impressive, well designed app that simplifies a fairly complicated process. Give it a try and let us know how it helps your day to day workflow.

If you want to keep unwanted eyes off of your printed documents, you can utilize a feature called Secure Print through your Xerox print driver. It comes standard on almost every new Xerox multifunction printer/copier. In short, you can send a document to a networked Xerox device and it won’t print out until you have the machine “release” your print job. Here’s how to do it on both Windows and Mac in five easy steps.

Windows

1. Choose File, then Print from the application window – in this example, we’re using Word 2010 but should work the same in most Windows programs.

2. Select your preferred Xerox printer, and then go to the Printer Properties which is located under the active printer in Office 2010.

3. Choose Secure Print on the Paper/Output tab, and then enter in your personal security code in both dialog boxes.

4. Hit Ok and then Print to send the job.

5. Go to the machine you sent it to, select Job Status from the touch screen, highlight your job by selecting it, and then finally release it by keying in your code you entered in step 3.

Mac

1. Choose File, then Print from the application window – in this example, we’re using Pages but should work the same in most Mac programs.

2. Select your Printer, and then go choose Xerox Features from the third drop-down menu.

3. Choose Secure Print, which is found under the Paper/Output drop-down (if it’s not already selected), and then enter in your personal security code in both dialog boxes.

4. Hit Ok and then Print to send the job.

5. Go to the machine you sent it to, select Job Status from the touch screen, highlight your job by selecting it, and then finally release it by keying in your code you did entered step 3.

Congratulations to Jim Bruce on winning our “Submit a Success Story” iPad giveaway contest.* Jim is co-owner at Allegra Print and Imaging with his wife Cheri in Sevierville, TN. Allegra offers a full array of print services – from quick copy jobs, to design and consultation.

Jim recently upgraded to the new Xerox 700 to help his shop meet the demands for his client base. “We had jobs coming in that we had to turn away because they required custom off-line finishing that took a lot of time. We just didn’t have the manpower to complete in a timely manner. With the new 700, we see a significant improvement in speed, increase our efficiency with an inline booklet maker, more organized workflow and in some cases eliminated the need to go to an out side source on some of the larger jobs we had been sourcing out.”

“Hungate has been very diligent about the sale of this equipment. They understand that we are making an investment in our business and must meet our specific criteria. The impact on our overhead, economic times, and equipment management to name a few. We knew over a year ago this type of machine would be best choice for us, just not at that time. They have patiently waited for the correct opportunity, and in that ended up with a piece of equipment that truly met our needs.”

Thanks again to everyone who entered, stay in touch with us for future offerings.

“The initial solution that was proposed to us by our salesperson, Eric Hungate, was a multifunction machine that included multi-sheet scanner and the ability to transfer paper directly into a file. This solution became an instant fix for the accumulating paper and has greatly improved our efficiency with the ability to view documents without searching through a paper file. In the environment we work in today it would not be possible for our office to function without our Xerox solution.”

“Our relationship with Xerox and Hungate Business Services, began about 10 years ago with a basic copier and fax machine. It seemed that from day one we developed a trust relationship and that has proven to be very beneficial for our company as we have grown. As a company we strive to build this strong relationship with each of our clients just as Hungate has done with us. The personal interest that has been taken by our sales representative to find the correct solution for our company is a benefit that is “priceless” to our success.

They saw the “crayon bricks” that are used for ink and sort of looked at me funny. Bottom line is that we needed something for our Operations Center that could produce quality color documents at an economical price. Printing and copying from our traditional desktop printers and copiers were just not cost-effective anymore.”

“With the Xerox ColorQube we’ve cut our color costs in that department by 50%. Before we were charged about 10 cents for a color page – now we only pay about a nickel for the same document. That sort of savings is pretty substantial when considering all the benefits that the ColorQube brings to our organization. Behind employee salaries and overhead, document costs are our biggest expense. We’re also thrilled that we can do our part to maximize sustainability here at the bank with the ColorQube. It uses 90% less waste than traditional office devices with the consumables that go into the machine. It’s quite remarkable what Xerox has been able to accomplish with the solid ink technology.”

“Aside from the cost savings and going green, our users absolutely love the color off of the ColorQube. It’s the best quality we’ve ever had. The “crayon bricks” that were initially met with a little scrutiny, are now a hit with the employees. They even squabble with one another when it’s time to reload the ink because they say it’s like playing Tetris.”

“We look forward to future deployments with Xerox and the solid ink technology for our bank. It’s very cost-effective and works great. I’d highly recommend it for any office out there looking to produce high quality color at low costs.”
